Quite simply, this may be the best mascara I have ever used. And I want to publicly acknowledge my sis-in-law, Amy Lesch, for her vigilant look-out of new products for me to try. She was right on the money on this one. So Amy, thank you!

Blog-o-sphere, if you were ever going to splurge on a mascara (and at $30, it is a treat), this is The One. The first sign of its lovability is the fact that holding the tube is like holding a piece of wrought iron: it is heavy. Only something substantial could be that heavy, right? Then when you pull out the brush from the tube that first time, you realize the bristles on the brush are going to treat you right. Tapered at the tip-end so you can reach those delicate inner-corner lashes, and fat and full on the handle-end, really help to fan out those corner lashes.

I simply cannot go on about this one mascara enough. It is my new fave, and it is worth every cent. It comes in a waterproof formula, as well, but I like the convenience of the regular version. I have had no problems with it budging at all. As a matter of fact, it takes a small splash of water at the end of the day, plus a little eye makeup remover to gently coax it off. It stays put until you are ready to remove it.

I purchased mine at Nordstroms, but you can find it at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, or through the Giorgio Armani Beauty website.

If Loreal says you're worth it, Giorgio Armani says you're worth it all. Happy Mascara-ing!

Will Work for (Really Great) Jeans: Beija-Flor!

I had one of the most amazing all-female-crew experiences one overcast afternoon last December on Seabrook Island. When I hung up the phone after speaking with Emilie Moca Whitaker, principal of Beija-Flor Jeans, I knew I wanted a piece of this action. I am a bit of a denim-snob to begin with (the designer jeans simply fit me better, is what I tell myself), and I was harboring the thought that maybe I would work for jeans. After hearing the history of this phenomenal family-run company (a mother-and-daughters team) based out of Greenville, SC, I was sold on their integrity, spirit, pride in their heritage (Brazil!), and work ethic. Then I met them. Then I worked with them. Then I wore their jeans. I am now proud to call myself a Beija-Believer. The literal translation of the Portuguese phrase beija-flor means kiss-the-flower. Which is what a hummingbird appears to be doing while feeding. . . hence, their designer logo which is embroidered on the hip of their jeans. (Isn't it grand when symbolism and wording come together like that to represent so many things? I love the cleverness of it!)

Emilie and her mom, Kathy, along with Amanda-the-Super-Intern, had a look book assembled and knew the shots they wanted. Nicole, the model, was on board and had worked with these ladies for other studio shoots. As a matter of fact, its this Nicole for whom the B-F Nicole jean is named after. This is a mainstay of their jeans line that is somehow flattering on every body type. Check out the photos for the strategically-placed darts and seams that miraculously make every be-hind look booty-licious. I am now the proud owner of a pair of Nicole jeans, and they have trumped my True Religions, Joes, and Rock & Republics. The B-Fs fit me divinely.

By the way, model Nicole is more than a beautiful face. She's a Doctoral candidate at Clemson who can talk shop or product functionality with the best of them. She is the face of Beija-Flor: classic, boho-chic, timeless, and can cross the line to rock-glam if need be. It was a pleasure to work with her, as well.

And then there was the photographer. Jennings King. Jennings is making the transition to full-time lifestyle-editorial-wedding photographer, and has just the flair, style, and technique necessary to embark on this switch. She has an eye for beautiful scenery, amazing props, and a way of communicating clear direction. I am so pleased and honored to work with her during her ascension. She hasn't even made the leap yet from her day-job to full-time photog, and she has already booked her first wedding abroad! Congrats, Jennings. . . I know big things are in store for you.

It was Girl Power for sure that weekend. I am ready for another dose! Many thanks to Kathy Moca, Emilie Moca Whitaker, and Intern Amanda (wise beyond her young years, and task-master extraordinaire!) Liquid Eyeliner Looks

When I saw this photo, it was a reaffirmation of one of my makeup artistry goals: use more liquid liner! I love the look that a great liquid eyeliner can give. It's bold and quite the statement-maker. This is a printable, great guideline for different shapes to draw on the liner. What I've found about liquid eyeliner is that you simply have to make yourself do it. . .practice truly makes perfection!

These liner looks run the gamut from demure to Gaga-ish. Personally, I like a small, hug-the-lashline line, with a "baby-wingout". Choose the look you're going for, and get creative and do some kind of a variation on one of these. Send me a pic if you do one. . . I'd love to see what you're doing!

My 2012 Professional Goals

I am a blessed person, and I've always known it. My grounding force is a small voice that tells me that no matter what, I'm going to be okay. As I ruminate on this knowing, especially here at the beginning of a new year, I find it a great jumping-off point for putting together my professional goals list for 2012. But I'm also a realist; I know that if these things don't come to pass, they'll simply carry over to a following year. Some of these goals are lofty and some are super-attainable. What I know is that I need to put this out there. . . to the Universe. . . to You. In my life I've learned that's how things manifest for me: if I don't ask, the answer is always, "no." To that end, here's what I'm asking:

1. I'd like to do makeup for an Asheville, NC wedding. I'm talking Biltmore or Grove Park Inn. Or even a wedding in a barn in a field of glorious Western North Carolina. I want to take a little piece of Charleston up I-26 to one of my favorite spots in the world. I want to be part of a team of professionals who helps make an Appalachian wedding into a dreamscape. I want those photos to be part of my portfolio of interesting places and beautiful faces.

2. I want to do more publication work. I love my brides, and my weekends are dedicated to them. However, it's the spice of my work-life to pepper my weekdays with photo shoots, lifestyle shoots, and commercial work. This is where I have the opportunity to mingle with other creatives and they FEED me. They make me want to grow, think around the box, and be the best makeup artist I can be. I crave this.

3. I'd like to continue my education as a MUA. Specifically The Makeup Show in London this September. All the most brilliant minds of makeup artistry are represented, along with the most cutting-edge brands and tools. Staying on top of trends, tools, and techniques is paramount to any MUA's career.

4. I'd like to make makeup application videos. I know YouTube is brimming with them, but I feel I have a circle of clients and friends who would love to see them and could benefit from me putting them out there. Nothing long and drawn out. . . I'll try to keep it under 3 minutes.

5. I want to deepen my current professional relationships. I've been so fortunate to surround myself with quality folk. . .people who trust me but also know they can rely on me. It is such a HUGE compliment to know that someone has referred me and my services. What they are really saying is, "I trust Pamela." That means the world to me. There are a couple of pro-relationships who are on the periphery of my world. . . we've dabbled in the past and maybe we don't work together very often. But to them I say, "Let's dance! Let's take a chance and get to know one another." I got some goods and I'll bring them to the party :)

6. I'd like to be a mentor to the right person. . . someone who is serious about a career in makeup, is at least as reliable and professional as I am (if not more). This last one is a big one for me. It may take the longest to accomplish because it means relinquishing a little control. I get asked fairly often if I would "train" someone to be a MUA which is very appealing to the teacher-side of me. It's a compliment I know, but up until now, I have felt so protective over what I've built with my business. Starting from scratch and learning every little step of the way. But I also know that part of my evolution in this role, and as a good steward in this karmic world, is to pass along what may be useful and helpful to someone else. After all, makeup is just part of this. . . it's so psychological and the business is really about making connections to other human beings. For me, once the trust is established, the artistry flows.

So, there it is. My hopes, dreams, wishes, and goals for 2012. Whatcha gonna do with it, Universe?

Let it Glow, Let it Glow, Let it GLOW!

Thank you Kelly, for giving me the kickstart I needed to discuss some great products that I've been trying for a couple of months now!

Today's feature is on a Make Up For Ever product called Uplight. This is a tremendous product that I've been using on clients in these drier autumn months to help create the illusion of luminosity (in the absence of the Charleston humidity that gives us that all-too-natural glow:)

I LOVE this and many other MUFE products. It's a face luminizer gel that can be worn under foundation (I apply prior to airbrushing), over foundation (as on my own face over MUFE's High Def liquid foundation), or all alone (with a hint of concealer to even out any dark areas).

Although there are a dozen or more shades, I'm currently working with 3 shades in my kit:

#11 is a dewy, pink beige (great for pinky or red-undertone skin)

#12 is a dewy, golden beige (lovely on skin with golden undertones)

and #22, a pearly, pink flesh. . . pretty on most every skin tone.

Apply with fingers or a flat foundation or concealer brush: tap over the highest point of your cheekbones; circle around the outside of the orbital bone (near outer edges of eyes). I also like to dab a bit at the height of my eyebrow, closest to the arch.

I feel the urge to write about one of the most amazing things that's ever happened to me, but I also feel torn about the medium I'm using: my makeup blog. How do I relate this to MAKEUP??? Here goes:

I had one of the most full-circle experiences of my life two days ago: I had the amazing good fortune to be able to meet my all-time favorite music icon, Glen Campbell.

Glen Campbell is my first musical memory. In 1969 my dad put me on his shoulders at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville so I could see over the heads of all the other people to get a look at my early childhood idol. I remember looking over the crowd and seeing a redheaded flop-top bound on to the stage with an acoustic guitar. I don't remember what he sang; I mainly remember the utter joy that I felt then, at age 3, seeing this man who until that point, I had only seen on his Good Time Hour tv show. That same exact feeling washed over me two nights ago at the Ryman Auditorium when I got to stand next to him and meet him.

I'll be the first to admit. . . this is a Daddy-thing. Gordon McCully's love of Glen Campbell's musicianship (in his opinion, the best guitarist ever), his collaborations with Jimmy Webb (songwriter extraordinaire), and his down-home good-mannered way. . . all trickled down to me. I loved Glen as much, if not more than my dad. Compound all this with the fact that my dad was a redhead as well, both men took/take great pride in our Scottish heritage, and both Daddy and Glen were born in the same year, 1936. I feel like I have all kinds of karma with Mr. Campbell.

Toward the end of my dad's life, he had become something of a homebody. He didn't care to wander too far away; he preferred the creature comforts of his own surroundings. But in 2006 we both celebrated milestone birthdays: his 70th and my 40th. It was a momentous occasion that called for a big celebration, just the two of us. So he agreed to go on a road trip with me to Nashville and the Ryman Auditorium to see our all-time fave, Glen Campbell. It was to be the last trip my dad and I would spend together, and it was the best quality time I've spent with him as an adult. He bragged about that trip to anyone who would listen.

Since then, Glen Campbell has publicly announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. He and his beautiful wife have spoken candidly about it, and he has embarked on this Goodbye Tour that's scheduled far into spring, 2012. This diagnosis strikes home as well, because of my mother's recent diagnosis. Again, worlds collide, and I just sit and wonder at the workings of it all. When I heard about his Goodbye Tour, I knew I'd make plans to go see him, and this time my sister Jenny would come along.

Jenny and I met up with my dear friend Robert Kearns, who is a touring musician and also a Glen Campbell fan. Robert has a distinguished musical resume, and although he is never quick to drop a name or the fact that he's the bass guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd, well. . .it has its perks. He has always made fast friends, and it should have come as no surprise that Glen Campbell's road manager would be one, but I honestly had no idea that would actually get us some place on November 30.

Robert came prepared with an old photo he'd had made with Glen, while he was touring with the Brad Paisley camp. Glen remembered him and was especially pleased after learning of Robert's current gig. I was standing there, just drinking in the fact that I was merely inches away from my icon. Introductions were made and there I was shaking hands and smiling face-to-face with Glen Campbell. Still the most gracious, sweet-natured man I imagined him to be. Only now I was aware that there was a camera man standing nearby filming this. I remembered my sister standing next to me, so I grabbed her wrist and pulled her in close to me so I could introduce her and here's what happened:

Me: "Glen, I'm just a lifelong fan, and I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to meet you. This is my sister, Jenny."
Glen: "What's her name? Jenny??" Then he started singing a song that jumped out of the recesses of my mind. . . "Jenny, Jenny, won't you come along with me. . . Jenny, Jenny, woooooooh, Jenny, Jenny..."

It was a Little Richard song that we had on an album in my home growing up, called "The Georgia Peach." I KNEW THAT SONG and before I realized it, I was joining in and singing with him, hitting that high note "woooooooh. . ." Glen looked at me and smiled. Jenny and Robert looked at me as if to say, "Really???" And I just laughed. As we walked away from our meeting Robert said, ". . .you do realize you just sang with Glen Campbell?"

Well, the guy with the camera approached us as we walked back across that famous old Ryman Auditorium stage. He told us that they were filming a documentary about Glen's life. He asked Robert to say his name and contact info so he could get permission from us if they use it in the finished project. And before I knew it, I asked if I could tell him about my Glen Campbell back story, and he said of course. So I did, starting with my 3-year old memory, and my voice broke and I kept talking nearing the verge of tears. And he looked at me from behind his camera, and said, "Wow. How did tonight's experience match up to your memory of 1969?" And I told him exactly what I felt: it was simply the same JOY I felt then. The exact same, only it had come full circle.

Flash back to a few hours prior: as Jenny and I were getting ready in our hotel room for the show that night, I made a very conscious decision to wear red lipstick, which I rarely do. I wanted "a look." So I opted for my NARS "Cruella" Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. I felt sassy, and look what it got me :)

Love and Light to my father (who I know was there with me); my sister Jenny; Robert "don't-ever-doubt-the-Kearns" Kearns; and Glen Campbell. . .who has brought me and my McCully family more joy in our lives than he'll ever know.

The Secret to Successful Concealing

Meet MAC's Pro Longwear Concealer. It's my new best friend (and my tired, stressed-out, sleep-deprived clientele's, too). I could do an whole blog on this entire line of MAC Pro Longwear. . . I happen to love this stuff!

I'm going through more of this concealer than any I've used on any clients before now. Its consistency is perfect for that oh-so-delicate skin that's just under eyes. Its pigment is opaque enough to hide dark circles and red areas. Yet it's non-drying like some other pasty concealers. I love it as a prelude to a light misting of MAC's airbrush formula foundation.

I'm also using it personally. . .it's in my makeup drawer in my own dressing room. Which seems to be a test of makeup that I just can't do without in my kit. A tiny dab will do. . . blend in small circles with a fluffy eyeshadow brush that you dedicate to your concealer.

Looking to switch things up a bit with your concealer? I'd highly suggest this! Remember, concealing rules have evolved: Gone are the days of "reverse raccoon eyes" (you know, where your under-eye makeup is way too light). The secret to successful concealing is matching your own skin tone, nearly exactly.

Meet Alexis. She's one of those decisive women who knows just how she likes things. She's a makeup maven who knows her product and how she prefers to use it. (Concealer and eyeliner are her faves:)

Now, go check out her photographer, Andrew Stephen Cebulka. This was my first time working with Andrew, and I was super-impressed. Not only with his amazing shutterbug skills, but with how he works a room full of women in the throes of pre-wedding flutter. He's calming, assuring, and in control. I'd be willing to bet he's one of those people his friends call "a great guy."

Head Shots

So. . .I needed some new head shots but I knew there was a lot of work that had to go into this undertaking first. Here are some of my thoughts on my process whether you are considering doing this for yourself for professional or personal reasons.

My first step was deciding I needed to update my look. That entailed the decision to go to a short haircut. That was not such a stretch for me as I had been going progressively shorter for the past couple of years. I'm nothing, if not someone who loves the shock-value of changing things up a bit. And after all, hair grows. . . I'm lucky that mine grows pretty quickly. But even that's jumping the gun: I happen to love my short hair. It works for me, and as a makeup artist, I find it provides the perfect excuse to raise the bar on my own applications. Enter my dear friend, Tanesha Dupree. We were working a photo shoot about a month ago and I looked at her and asked, "Do you think I could carry a short pixie cut?" She didn't hesitate in her answer, "Yes!" My next question was, "would you cut it for me?" Her reply: "you've given me goosebumps. . . of course, I will!" Tanesha and I are professional soul-mates. I know her work and trust her ethic and skill, blindly. But I knew I had to contact the stylist whom I patronize: The Fabulous Kim Jones of Salon 101 Spring. I spoke with her briefly and although she was not available to do the cut, she confirmed my idea: yes, I could do a pixie. Side note: I'm a very lucky lady to have the friends and be privy to the talented artists in this industry that I do. However, once I've made up my mind that a big change is in order, it needs to be done yesterday. I'm an instant-gratification gal that way. Thank you, Kim, for giving me the courage to proceed. And thank you Tanesha, for executing the cut I longed for. Although I see Tanesha work in a mostly bridal and editorial capacity, each time amazed by her hair artistry, she's a Master Barber by training. I now know why. I dearly love both of these super-talented women.

Then comes the process of planning your look. Knowing why you are doing head shots is of primary importance. For me, it was a means of communicating to my potential clients. I needed a photo that conveys confidence and trust; something that says, "I'd love to do your makeup, and I'll do it expertly."

Enter Diana Deaver, photographer of souls. Her mantra matches mine: "I'd love to do your portrait, and I'll do it expertly." I've blogged previously about some of my experiences with Diana. She's simply someone who loves beauty in its many manifestations, and someone I fall into easy banter with. I knew I had to be super-chill for the best results, and I thought Diana would be the person who could help me get there. Even now, I could sit and write about the sensory experience of being photographed by Diana. The rain forest incense from her home is still with me, hours after picking up my proofs. And that's a great metaphor for Diana: she lingers. Her words, her essence, her heart . . . it's just out there. I'm tuned in to her. Thank you, D.

There's so much more. Maybe even worthy of another blog entry. The lessons I learned from each of these ladies, along with the "be prepared" credo. I'll be thinking on that, too:) Oh, and the makeup? By Yours Truly. My makeup is very indicative of how I approach my clients. I know that I'm more of a "naturalista" and those types tend to gravitate toward me. Don't get me wrong. . . I can beat down a face with the best of the makeup divas, but the ladies who like "Me. . . just an enhanced version. . ." are people I understand.

PRTTY PEAUSHUN ("pretty potion")

I was first introduced to "PRTTY PEAUSHUN" by a client of mine. I was struck by the packaging: eco-friendly, sleek, and oh-so-squeezable. Then, I opened the cap and there sat the most beautiful dollop of lotion just asking to be squoze out ;) So, I did, and it was love at first sight.

This peachy-pearlized lotion is very light and a perfect companion for bare summer skin: legs, shoulders, decollete, arms. It gives the perfect amount of shine and light. I buffed it in with one of my MAC buffer brushes, and the effect was simply amazing!

My research began. And so did my correspondence with its creator, Bethany Karlyn, a Hollywood makeup artist. I was sold by the beauty and simplicity of this product. And the name is so clever: I loved the alliteration (P's are my fave) and I loved the unusual spelling (peau is French for "skin"). I also loved that I had "discovered" a product that I had not seen in the Charleston area. Brazen little blogger that I am, I decided to contact the California people of Prtty Peaushun. I introduced myself as a makeup artist in Charleston, SC, and told them how much I loved their product. . .

What I did not expect was a series of e-mails with the creator herself. Bethany Karlyn, who can boast a clientele of some of Hollywood's elite (including fitness guru Tracy Anderson whose torso and legs appear above) took the time to correspond with little ol' me. She told me about PP's many different uses, including priming a clean face with this stuff for the softest, most photo-friendly glow. She also told me how many on-location hairstylists are using just the teeniest dab of it as a finish over their styles for a touch of hair-glow. Simply stunning!

I'm on a mission to tell all my clients about this phenomenal product. If you like your bare arms, shoulders, and legs with a dash of shimmer and healthy glow, this is a must-try for you. It comes in a range of 5 shades, with "medium" being the most universal.

A Personal Note: My Mama

She is the reason I do what I do, why I love what I love. My mama was my first and most important inspiration in my life, especially for all-things makeup. My earliest makeup memory is that of my mother getting dressed to go out with Daddy. Her beautiful, dark hair, golden complexion, and red lips. I remember her being so pretty and not wanting her to leave. No babysitter could take her place; no one could make me feel so comfortable or loved. I wanted her to keep her rollers in place a little while longer. The hard rollers with the stick-pins that held them in her hair. The can of aerosol hairspray that would shellac her short bouffant. She'd laugh and patiently wait as I swiped my little finger across her red lips in order to put some on mine.

It was a surreal experience to pack away those same old rollers two weeks ago. As I stood in her bathroom and put together all her personal belongings to make their way to her new home, I flashed back to that first bathroom of hers that I could remember. The one where I was three years old. Those rollers. Those pink stick pins. She still uses the AquaNet spray. I was a little dumbstruck how she held on to all the upscale makeup I have given her over the years, nearly untouched, and yet her Maybelline and Revlon and Max Factor bottles were nearly empty. Some habits die hard, I suppose.

My mom's new home is a nursing home. Her physician said it was time. Her dementia said it was past time. Mama's moments of clarity make this one of the hardest transitions of both our lives. At 78, her miraculously-still-brunette hair with only a few grays at her temples, seem almost deceiving in a sea of white to blue hair. It's one of the reasons she feels she does not belong there. At her core, she's still a proud woman, vain in her appearance. Lipstick is her pick-me-up. A tweeze of a stray hair lifts her spirits. A dab of Frances Denney's Interlude or Hope perfume behind each ear, makes her feel polished.

Mama has a standing appointment at the facility's beauty salon each week. Shampoo and set. God bless the nail technician who volunteers her time each week to come in and paint these ladies' fingernails. My mom is right in line and makes the chit-chat as she waits her turn.

Lots of changes going on. Some funny, some heart-wrenching, but all are part of this new chapter in her story. And through it all, she's still one of the great beauties of my life. I love you, Mama.

We share most every great thing that comes our way: a recipe, clothes, a great hair stylist, a bottle of wine. That was the back story when this amazing photo shoot landed in my lap courtesy of

Kiawah Legends magazine.

This photo shoot would encompass an evening fresh off an early-autumn beach stroll, cocktails-to-dinner, and languishing pool- and fire-side chats. These girlfriends were celebrating the publication of Carolyn Evans' new book, Forty Beads. The background was one lovely beachfront home on Kiawah Island, and the feel was that of an upscale GNI: Girls' Night In.

What morphed out of this was my own friendship and easy communication with Carolyn Evans and this method of hers for "The Simple, Sexy Secret for Transforming Your Marriage." It's a quick-read and a real fire-starter for those of us looking to keep the fires burning in our marriage.

De-Slick is Delightfully Mattifying

I see so many clients who constantly battle facial oiliness. It's a curse in your youth, but a blessing in disguise. More than likely if you suffer from facial oiliness, and you've no doubt heard it before, but it's a virtual insurance policy for anti-wrinkling in later years.

Combine oily skin with the impending summer humidity, and that's one recipe for a makeup meltdown.

The current formulation I'm using comes in two tubes, prior to foundation:

A pea-size dab of Urban Decay's Pore Perfecting Primer +

one-half that amount of UD's De-Slick (gel) in a Tube.

Mix it on the back of your hand, use a foundation brush to tap it on and smooth it across your face, concentrating it on the oily t-zone areas.

Wait a minute, then apply foundation. This time-released formulation helps absorb oil production throughout the day to keep your face at it's mattified best.

For me, it's the "dry down" of warm patchouli that attracted me to this scent. I happen to love the soft, floral feminine overtones, especially in Charleston's warmer climate. This is my go-to scent for this time of year. Especially since it ensures a warm husband-nuzzle right in the soft of my neck (he loves it, too!).

I adore this beautiful, heavy bottle, but I also love that the to-go solid version is easily slipped into my touch-up cosmetic bag. The solid is quite long-lasting, too.

TGW and I met when I did her makeup last October, as she was doing bridesmaid duty in her friend's lovely wedding. We hit it off with lots of "small world" connections, and she gave me a call to recreate a "natural, smoldering" look for her boudoir session. I think we hit it out of the park!

Of course, it takes a great photographer to put a person at ease in this kind of session. And that's what Hattie Coryell of Gracie Layne Photography did. GREAT job, Hattie!

HeartsApart.org was created by our amazingly talented and generous photographic community. Founded in Wilmington, NC, its mission is to keep our military families at the forefront of our consciousness for all they sacrifice on a daily basis. It's a way to keep deployed families within an arm's reach of each other, even while serving overseas. At the crux is a set of bi-fold photos, taken by some of the most well-respected, highly sought-after photographers in our nation. These bi-folds fit neatly in the deployed serviceperson's uniform pocket. The photos are of immediate family: children, and spouses. The inside of the bi-fold is an intimate, "for their eyes only" shot of the other spouse. The wallet-sized, plastic-coated set of folded photos means the world to the person carrying it. It means s/he has family at their fingertips when they are half-way across the globe.

I'll never forget the day that Charleston photographer, Diana Deaver, asked me to be involved with this project. She was the local photographer who was asked to photograph a Charleston Air Force family before the husband/dad's deployment. Although I did not know much about this organization at the time, I did know Diana. She possesses one of the most giving, generous hearts of any one I've ever met. There was no "let me check my calendar. . ." it was only, "tell me where and when, D. . ." As you can see from the resulting photographs, she got what she was aiming for with this young military family.

The icing on the cake came in the form of a Brownie. Harris, that is. I was set up in the kitchen of our studio for the day, and I heard a voice I'll always have locked in. That mellifluous, genteel voice of Brownie Harris. I had no idea he'd be popping in during the day, nor that he was involved in this at all. But as a matter of fact, Brownie is one of the visionaries of this organization. He has helped grow HeartsApart.org into something so much more far-reaching than was ever imagined. He spoke glowingly of Diana and said what a gifted photographer of women she was; that she had an especially sensitive way of helping women let their guard down, and then REALLY capturing them with her camera. I found this to be the highest of compliments, but having seen Diana work previously, I already knew it to be true. It was simply phenomenal to hear Brownie articulate it.

This is one of the most worthwhile projects I've ever been involved in. Thank you, Universe, for allowing me to see this first hand. And thanks to the following:

I. Love. Lashes. Whether mascara'd, false, uber-fake feathery, or this: XTreme Lashes!

Ask any of my previous or current clients: I'm a Lash Gurl. Lashes are the difference-maker, whether in photographs or just running out of the house for errands. If you were to ask me what's the one makeup product I can't live without, in a heartbeat, I'd tell you, "Mascara." As long as I have my XTreme Lashes, I have no need for mascara. I'm here to tell you that I haven't worn mascara in 4 weeks! That hasn't happened since I was 14 years old.

The backstory: I met Bonnie Mitchum of Aesthetispa a few years back when she was the go-to expert on airbrush tanning here in Charleston. Bonnie had expanded her tanning, massage therapy, and permanent makeup business to include eyelash extensions. Fast forward to this past January, when we reconnected at a sweet soiree hosted by our friends at Belle Couture Bridal. I was asked to do makeup demos, and Bonnie was there to demonstrate an eyelash extension application. That was it for me: heavenly clouds parted, and a chorus of Lash Angels sang. I knew this was my lash-destiny.

You can see from the pictures above, how short my natural lashes are. Then, pow! You can see the difference the Xtreme lashes make. There's no need for mascara. I'm a real softie when it comes to the care of these. And I knew I'd be a good candidate for extension-longevity: I'm not an eye-rubber, and I'm very careful when I remove any makeup from my eyelids. I'm gentle with these, and they've lasted quite a while. I've had one fill-in and I'm going back today for my next one.

What to expect: for the first application, allow yourself around 90 minutes. This is a detailed project. Each lash is applied individually to one of your lashes. The glue is mighty: it bonds the Xtreme lash to your individual lash. During my initial application, I had 62 lashes applied to each eye. My favorite thing about this is the slight flair-out at the edges of my eyes. It really gives that doe-eyed effect that's very soft, and quite natural. Bonnie (and her team of Xtreme-trained lash technicians) spend time figuring out what length and volume will look best on you. Lots of things are taken into consideration such as how much space there is between your lash-line and your eye brow. I have plenty of room between mine, and when I open my eyes, the lashes still don't touch my brows. I was most surprised by how weightless these felt. I literally could not feel any heaviness or any difference between the extensions and my normal lashes. There are several products that this line makes to help ensure a long life. . . my favorite is the brush-on liquid, applied daily, that helps strengthen the glue's bond.

I tried doing my lash application along the same timeline as a bride. I had them applied, wore them for a couple of weeks, had a touch-up or fill-in (I retained most of my lashes, so I didn't need that many) to get them back to the full-status as above. THEN, I went on vacation. . . and I put these to the test with swimming and snorkeling. I'm proud to say they are still here, minus the few that are shed according to my own natural lash cycle. They are quite natural looking, and sooo beautiful! For me, these lashes make it easy to have a pulled-together look in no time: dab on a little concealer, blush, and lip gloss on and I'm out the door!

Not only will I recommend them for my bridal clients, but for any girl-on-the-go who wants to bump it up a bit. I love my Xtreme Lashes!!! Bonnie and her team of lash specialists can be reached at 843.478.8586.

My love of this magazine began last year when I was a participant in a photo shoot for its Volume 3 cover finalist (see previous post). This magazine manages to capture the essence of weddings in the South. From the most spectacular venues to, Mason jars filled with Fire Fly concoctions (and lightning bugs, too;) to the finest regional cuisine and all things Southern in between. Diana Deaver. Photographer. Visionaire. Difference-maker. Your photography is finding its way throughout this lovely city of ours like the roots of some lovely flower. Every time you click your camera, you manage to find beauty; more likely, you are simply reflecting the beauty you already see inside your subject. The fact that you put together an event that celebrates beauty from the inside out, is a testament to your dedication to where true art lies: in the eye of the beholder. I really want a water filter for my shower head now;) You reminded me that proper diet and rest are vitally important in my quest for beautiful skin. Thank you for wearing it all on your sleeve.

Elli Boland. Nutrition and fitness expert. I laughed out loud at your opening line. . . "What's up bitches??? I mean Beautiful Goddesses!!!" If ever there were a walking, talking personification of someone who practices what she preaches, it's you. Thinking about what my body needs is key in helping me obtain my nutritional best. However, it was one of your final points, Elli, that struck home with me most: to reprogram ("train my brain") through positive affirmations such as I am Healthy, and I am Beautiful just the way I am, and Thank you, Body, for giving me life. And forgiving myself for an occasional slip of a cookie or other treat.

Shauna Mackenzie Heathman. Image consultant. Did I ever consider "image consulting" before I heard you speak? Honestly, no. But wow, this is a very viable and appropriate field to study today, the Information Age. Shauna you made so many amazing points, but once you teased us with "The Secret to a Great First Impression," I was hooked. But the first great point was that despite the old adage "there's no second chance at making a great first impression," one should consider that someone who did not make that great of a first impression should be given the opportunity to redeem him/herself. We'll never know the many possibilities that led to that encounter. I'm a firm believer in second chances, so this struck home with me. So without further adieu, the secret to a great first impression: Be aware of how I make another person feel.

In addition to these encyclopedic minds, the SCSW was sprinkled with the cutting edge fashion designs of Alena Fede, Chelsie Ravenell, Sherri Miller, Beth Pilger and Anna Lassiter. So a big congrats to ALL involved and I'm looking forward to the next SC Style Workshop!

An Essay on Boudoir Photography

Boudoir photography is something I'm seeing more of in this take-it-up-a-notch world of marital bliss. It's a fantastic way to capture a bride or wife at a moment when she's feeling very good about herself. The boudoir shoots I've been involved in have had a clandestine element about them mostly because the ladies being photographed want to keep an element of surprise in presenting these albums to their husbands. I continually hear these ladies tell of the reactions of their spouses when they give them The Book. Usually his jaw drops, and by the time they can collect themselves enough to speak, the first words out are "Who took these photos?"

So, meet Miss K and Miss L. These two ladies are bff's from childhood. They were both engaged during the same time and planning weddings in two different cities. This photo shoot was part of a brainstorm of ideas to give as wedding gifts to their respective husbands. This may have been one of the most luxurious shoots I've been involved in; these ladies did it up and planned it beautifully. The backdrop is a beautiful old hotel in downtown Charleston with rich textures everywhere I looked. From the moment I walked in, they were giddy with excitement over their costume changes. Everything was planned out to the Nth degree. . . the venue, lingerie, sports momentos, SHOES like you wouldn't believe, and hair and makeup.

Now, a word about the hair: Tanesha Dupree. For so many reasons, Tanesha is one of my favorite people, not to mention stylists. She custom ordered and made these hair pieces. Yes, they are extensions, and that was part of the fantasy of this photo shoot. . . stepping outside boundaries and trying to conjure a different look. Then the makeup comes in and plays off that. . . lashes and eyeliner galore, great skin, shiny lips. Put it all together and these ladies stepped into a world that was full of confidence, and sheer delight because they knew how much the hubsters were going to love this.

And then of course, it takes the utmost professional photographer to pull this all together. Brooke Christl of Myrtle Beach has a sub-specialty in this type of photography. She's a wedding and lifestyle photographer, who has a real knack for boudoir. I knew as soon as I heard the interaction among Brooke and these ladies, that the resulting photos would be amazing. She's a master of direction. . . and that's exactly what it takes when it comes to getting the best results with boudoir photos. How to stand, where to put hands, feet, a tilt of the chin, placement of everything in general. She was phenomenal in thinking up situational events that helped put her clients at ease. That's what makes a great photographer. . . the knowing and anticipation of what their clients want.

I'll stop going on . . . but believe me, I could ramble. This was a wonderful thing to be a part of and witness. The great communication, the exuding confidence, and the FUN that comes from this. Thank you, ladies, for allowing me to play a part. And for those of you who have ever or never considered this: please do so; it's a real treat, something you'll look back and be so proud of. True to form, June, 2010 was a blissfully busy month. Not only did I have my slew of real-life brides who were getting married around various Charlestonian landmarks, but I got the call from Melissa Schollaert Photography, asking me to do makeup for a photo shoot she was putting together. My gut told me I had to make this work, and I'm so happy it did. The assignment: Laurenesque (as in Ralph), natural makeup. I think we achieved it!

Melissa was entering a cover shoot contest for Southern Weddings Magazine, and the theme she put together was a gentile Charleston, marine-based wedding. Melissa, an Atlanta photographer, did her research and came up with some of Charleston's finest vendors, couture, cuisine offerings, and venues. This shoot was chosen as a Cover Finalist, and I believe that only whet Melissa's appetite for her next cover shoot. I'm so excited for 2011's wedding season. . . I'm armed and ready to "Cham Pale" my brides!

MAC's holiday release of the Cham Pale collection screamed "Bride!" to me. There are several other products in this launch, but the products I'm planning on using most from this release, I've included above. I'm MOST excited about the paint pots. Just check out those colors. . . although you can't tell from these photos, they are extremely shimmery, and I normally don't do a lot of shimmer. HOWEVER, after playing around with this collection, my plan is to lay down the paint pot over the eyelid first, then go back over it with a matte eyeshadow in the same color family. So far, all of my experiments have been STUNNING.

This is one of the most splurge-worthy brushes I own. It's MAC's #182 buffer brush (also called a "kabuki" brush). At $47, it's a splurge, but it is SO worth it. It's natural fibers provide the perfect dusting surface to apply mineral powders flawlessly. EVERY ONE (as in 100%) of the clients I use this brush on, have commented on what a soft, luxurious brush this is. With LOTS of hairs, and a huge fluffability factor, this brush ensures a sublime coverage. This one needs to be on your Santa List :)

This Julie Hewett Los Angeles "cheekie brush" is my newest love. It's still in my own personal makeup drawer. . . it hasn't made it to my kit yet. I'm not ready to let it go, so that means I'll be purchasing another one soon (at $28, I find it quite reasonable for its specialized nature). Because I personally test each product I write about, that's how I gauge my standard for bloggage: do I want to move it over to my kit? If I can't quite part with it, that's a sure sign I've got a winner. So, I don't part with it. . . I go and purchase another one to use with my clients.

The pictures above are right on with regard to size. The cheekie brush has a small, densely-packed head of hairs. The fibers are not bend-y like the MAC buffer. The cheekie is meant to apply cream blushes which is one of my current faves. I like to use this brush to collect cream blush, then dot it on the apples of my cheeks. I use it with any of my NARS Multiples and my MAC Blushcremes.

If you are looking to seriously up-the-amp on your makeup applications, these two brushes would make a spectacular addition to your tool arsenal.

Philips' DBA. . .Dead Battery Anxiety: a Corporate Makeup Gig

In the land of photo shoots and filming webisodes (online advertising campaigns), things move quickly. I got the call on a Tuesday, and by Friday, I found myself fully ensconced in a 3-day shoot as STYLIST!

Slant Media, a boutique creative design firm here in Charleston, landed the Philips Consumer Lifestyle account for their new iPhone/iPod charger. The creatives over at Slant (Christopher & Lauren) hired Alexander at Fox Media to do the filming for this campaign. It was Alex Fox who brought me in on this project.

Dead Battery Anxiety or "DBA" is that generalized feeling of the-bottom's-going-to-fall-out when your iPhone or iPod battery goes dead in the midst of some important event (business phone calls, online shopping, filming baby's first steps, etc.). It's that angst that makes us do crazy things like take advantage of the kid who's using the electrical outlet at the airport ("Plug Hawk") or when we miss those all-important "Baby's First Steps." DBA will also cause the hottest of hotties to drop to her knees and "Hit tha Flo'" in search of an outlet to charge her iPhone in the middle of a night of bar-hopping. DBA makes us do crazy things, indeed. The product is Philips' ChargeOn system that enables iPhone and iPod users to charge their batteries anywhere. . . thus eliminating the anxiety of DBA.

Several case studies were examined in the DBA phenom: The Queen of Snark; The Wedding Crasher; The Mattress Violator, and Mister Sensitive were a few of the profiles DBA looked into more carefully. If we're really honest, each of us sees a little of ourselves in these people.

So, what's a stylist's role in all this? Makeup and hair. Need a 40-year old to look 65? Done. Need tired, puffy eyes? Can do. Need businessman-losing-his-cool? OK. Need night-clubbing makeup? No problem. Need rocker-soccer mom angst? You got it. Need "plug hawk" just-been-tasered disarray? No worries. My biggest challenge was taking a beautiful 15-year old face and transforming it into an acne-riddled teen who has mom-issue: Accomplished! A shoot like this let me think in and out of the box. It was all laid out before me by a team of some of Charleston's most creative minds. Art directors, campaign coordinators, photographers, videographers, sound engineer, . . . all I had to do was turn the talent into these anxiety-ridden people.

Q: What's a makeup artist/blogger to do when writer's block sets in?
A: Open up her kit, take inventory, and figure out the products she's using most.

In my consistently-evolving world of PRODUCT, I use just about everything. Whether it's on myself, or those fabulous ones that I've used and have promoted to my kit. These are the tried-and-true products that I deem worthy of putting onto the faces of my clients. My product today is not a new one. It's just one I've not written about: it's been around for a long while, and that longevity qualifies it for one of the Gold Standards of my makeup kit:

MAC's Fluidline eyeliner. It's a cream/gel-based eyeliner that has to be applied with a brush (more on that in a minute:) Here is the short-list of why it's "gold standard":

1. It's waterproof.
2. It's extremely long-wearing.
3. MAC offers this formula in wonderfully bold colors.

Fluidline is perfect for brides, and all-day photo shoots, as well as for moms-on-the-go, and that working woman who doesn't have time to touch up her eyeliner. There are certain eye "looks" that require a liner that doesn't budge. . . such as the classic "Hollywood Glamour" look. . . you know, the single, winged-out line along the upper lashes (think Christina Aguilera or Audrey Hepburn).

One of my favorite uses of this liner is to help camouflage the nylon band of false lashes. Now, that brings me to tell you how important it is to use the proper tool to apply this product. My fave is MAC's teeny-tiny #208 brush. MAC calls it an "Angled Brow Brush" but this tool is one of my multi-taskers. The bundle of bristles on this brush are densely packed, very short, and therefore can be used to draw a fine, fine line. And that's how I begin. The fine line can always be built up to a thicker line if you want a more dramatic look. Like the name suggests, it's wonderful for filling in sparse brows with very small amounts of product (makes for a more natural look), but it's my favorite for applying Fluidline or blending out any pencil liner. . . or for lining lips with lipstick, or helping "mush" in false lashes along a lash. I use this brush in many ways.

At $16, this product is a steal: one container will last a very long time. Just be sure to keep the top securely fastened for even more product shelf-life. Yes, it may take some practice getting your line just right, but here are my tips for perfect application. First, use small amounts of product on the brush. Second, pull out the corner of your eye to make your lashline taut and therefore, easier to apply the liner to. Lastly, stay very close to your lash line (it's ok for the liner to actually get into your lashes. . . stay that close).

Give it a try. . . it's a wonderful, product. . . Happy Lining!

What's Working for Me Now: TRETINOIN

During my last visit to the dermatologist I was asked, "have you considered using a retinoid product?" My reaction was something like Scooby-Do. . . "Ruh-roh?" It hit home with me immediately. I knew from all my research that I was a prime candidate for using Retin-A or some kind of product that contained this powerful ingredient. Not from an acneic sense, but from an anti-aging ("anti-wrinkle") perspective. Retinoids are products that contain concentrated versions of vitamin A which help promote skin rejuvenation and cellular turnover. I jumped on it, and I must say that in only 2 weeks of using it, I'm seeing results already.

Let me be clear. . . my fine lines are still there, but I am witnessing a rejuvenation around my cheeks and jawline, and I'm waiting with baited breath to see some difference around my eyes. I'm having a significant amount of peeling, which is very common and one of the first side effects of using this product. By the way, Tretinoin is the generic version of "Retin-A". I'm using the highest concentration at 0.1%, which is pretty heavy duty.

I'm using this topical cream every third day. Here's my routine:

Each morning, I wash my face with a vitamin C cleanser. I lightly exfoliate and moisturize with an SPF 20 cream; then I apply makeup. The SPF is vital because the vitamin A makes you very susceptible to sun damage as you are using it therapeutically. If it were spring or summer, I'd use a 30+ SPF.

Each evening, I remove makeup with creamy makeup remover, then wash my face again with the vitamin C (foamy) cleanser. Using a washcloth helps remove all traces of the makeup, and acts as an exfoliator without having to use an abrasive product again that day. Every third evening, I squeeze about a half-inch of the cream from the tube, tap it between my fingers, and apply all over my face. I pay special attention to areas where there are sun spots (my cheeks and top of nose), as well as those fine lines around my eyes (careful not to go too close). The doctor said to be sure to use continual round rubbing motions, even when the product is absorbed; the longer you massage, the deeper it penetrates.

On the nights I use the Tretinoin, I do not use any moisturizer. My wonderful esthetician told me that using moisturizer on those nights could break down the concentration of the medication, which just makes sense to me. However, as a person with dry skin, I'm heavily moisturizing on the nights I don't use it.

I'll keep you posted; my peeliness is making me believe that changes are a'happnin :)

Rainy Day Engagement Shoot. . . Lawyers in Love

It began as a beautiful SEC-football filled Saturday. I should have guessed it would turn rainy when the Gamecocks of SC beat my beloved UGA Bulldogs.

However, that didn't dampen the spirits of the prep and party that was happening at a sweet urban loft on Charleston's King Street. Heather and Tim were in from Pittsburgh, and enjoying a lovely visit to Charleston to wrap up some pre-wedding planning. Including their engagement photo session with the divine Kim Graham.

One of Kim's many virtues is how she gets to know her clients. She knew Heather and Tim's epicurean love of food and wine. And that's what led to these series of photos. As soon as I saw them, I was awed. I left Heather that Saturday afternoon, and thought of her when the rain started pitter-pattering down. I never imagined that Kim would harness the rain to her advantage. But, as you can see, what she got was a very grown-up, sensory, and in my mind, sexy day.

Tonight, when I have my glass of red, I'll toast these lovely people. . . Heather & Tim and their wonderful taste in photographers.

I really try to keep my braggart moments to a minimum. But this only counts as a brag in the sense that it's trumpeting the company I keep. And I must say that one of my biggest sources of personal pride is that I have a knack for keeping company with top shelf folk ;)

My best man friend, David, is the source of my inspiration today. David is MAC's Southeastern trainer. That means he trains all new makeup artists for MAC, as well as certifies and keeps all existing artists current in new MAC product and trends. He attends "Train the Trainer" which is an international meeting of all the greatest minds of MAC (artistic and business). And he does soooo much more. Without going on and on, which I could easily do, suffice it to say, David possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of all things MAC and all things MAKEUP.

So, here's the condensed version of the long story I'd love to tell: David got a phone call from the one and only "Romero." (Romero Jennings is the MAC Senior Artist who had been contracted by fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo to do makeup for the models for his Spring 2011 show. In New York. At Lincoln Center. For NEW YORK FASHION WEEK.) Romero hand-picked his team of MAC artists, and called David to recruit him for this effort. In the world of makeup artistry, particularly beauty and fashion makeup, this is a holy grail. . . to work backstage makeup for the uber-designers and models. . . a dream realized! Kudos to Romero for a successful Fashion Week and having made the sage decision to include David Huebner!

David, I cherish you: the artist and the person. You so deserved this. MAC, and particularly your Southeast artists, are so fortunate to have you and your beautiful mind. You inspire me daily, and I'm proud to call you friend and rejoice in your accomplishments.

MTV's Made, "Pageant Queen"

I left my phone in the car this past March when I went into the Harris Teeter. When I returned, there was a voice mail that said, "Pamela, this is Lee from the MTV offices in New York. I'm a producer for the show 'Made'. . ." My little mental voice asked, "is this really Ashton. . . and was I being Punk'd? And so it began.

Understand, I'm a child of the 80s, when MTV was everything music-video. So, in my karmic world, an old love was coming back around. MTV??? Really???

My assignment: to transform the face of one female lacrosse-playing superstar at Wando High School into that of a rocker-chick. Thoughts of Pat Benatar, Patty Smith, and Joan Jett came to mind. I called my friend and fellow music-junkie Terry. . . "may I practice on you." She came over in an instant. On went the face, then came the smear of eyes and lips with the back of my hand. Voila! Look created.

The episode aired last Friday, October 1, and is titled "Pageant Queen." Although my part in this process focused on the Rocker Chick photo shoot, it was an amazing experience to play a small part in this. And I had a 2-second appearance on the show. . . AND my name appeared in the credits :)

I was standing in the shower this morning, getting ready to loofah my newest fave, clean scent, Philosophy's Amazing Grace, when I read the entire script on this bottle. I thought it was outstanding. Having been an English teacher, I really appreciated the analogy to a classroom.

That Last Little Somethin'-Somethin'

Brides, brides, brides! I love them, and I adore doing their makeup on Wedding Day!

Because it's high bridal season here in Charleston, I'm in a groove, and I've been thinking about my process when I apply a bride's makeup. It comes down to those final touches that put a makeup application over the top. Once their "face" is on, right down to the lashes, I find that I go back and add 2 to 3 more products that ALWAYS put on the finishing touch. Here are my tricks of choice:

1. Clean up any stray "fall" from powder shadows, and reapply a little more concealer over the darkest areas of the under-eye (usually the areas closest to the nose). My clean-up product of choice (and previous blog-worthy item): Make Up For Ever's Full Cover waterproof concealer. The tiniest bit goes a long way.

2. Highlight the tippy-tops of cheekbones with MAC's Mineralize SkinFinish in either Light Flush or Petticoat, making sure to stay away from the apples of the cheeks.

3. If I still need a little something-something, MAC's Eye Kohl in Powersurge (a metallic gold color) on the waterline (or rim) of the lower eyelid. This makes eyes POP without making them appear smaller.

An Oldie. . . A Goodie. . . A Splurge!

Christian Dior's DIORSHOW Mascara in Noir/Black is my new favorite. At $25, it was a splurge, but well worth it. It's one of those must-have mascaras that is a beauty luxury. Not only do I get great volume and length, but this is a delicious rose-scented mascara. . . that unexpected fragrance made it even more divine to apply. I really like the brush's pointed edge to get to my inner corner lashes.

I purchased mine at Dillard's, but you can find it at any higher-end department store that carries Christian Dior Cosmetics, as well as Sephora.

My never-ending search for a great mascara continues. . .

Pretty Preservationist, Perry

The girl's got style, vision, panache, and moxie! All this, plus she's a BLUSH girl. . . as in "I need more blush!"

Perry is one of those brides who has made a lasting impression, much like the old architecture, books, and mementos she studies and helps preserve. Sun Spot Fix-It Time

I went against my own good advice: this summer, I spent time at the beach during high-peak sun hours, without enough sun screen. I also spent a lot of time driving in the car, and my left side always seems to get beat up the most by the sun. Sure enough, those little brown sunspots have reappeared on my left cheek.

What caught my eye at the Clinique counter was the advertising campaign with the brown-spotted egg and the clean, clear tan egg. Hmm. . . I definitely wanted the clear, tan egg.

I left with two products, that I must say, I'm very impressed with: Clinique's Even Better Dark Spot Corrector (a milky serum), and it's moisturizing counterpart, Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF 20 (a cream). Over the course of the last five weeks, applying the serum morning and evening, there's a noticeable difference in the darkness of my sun spots. Even though they are still there, they've faded nicely. I use the moisturizer only during the day because of its SPF content.

My spots were what I'd categorize as mild to slightly moderate. I have seen results and plan to use it up. . . maybe they'll mostly disappear. If I ever pump out a bit more of either the serum or cream, I rub it onto the backs of my hands. (Something my grandmother taught me. . . don't neglect the hands!) No sunspots there yet, but a little prevention goes a long way.

Check it out if you have mild to moderate sun spots. . . Ask for a sample. . . Clinique is great about that.

A Necessary Attachment

This is not a brag; it's a truth: I love my stuff. I love all the palettes of color, the creamy concoctions, the silky powders, the wonderful-smelling spritzers and toners, the fluffy brushes. I love my kit which is the unit that carries all my products. Between my kit and what my eye and mind conjure up, there lies my business.

I marvel that I get to look into a clean face and see a myriad of opportunities. The first question I ask myself is, "What can I do to make this person more beautiful?" Each time I start off on that note, the results are almost always spectacular. It's leading with the heart, and I've found I cannot fail when I approach work that way. Hmm. . . there's a little yoga in there. When approaching most any situation or event or task in life, and if approached with, "how can I leave this better than I found it?" well. . . how can anyone go wrong?

Probably what's most un-yogic about this is my attachment to my stuff. But it's a necessary attachment that brings about a heart-felt result.

The Language of Love

A pervasive theme in my correspondence and communication with Ashley was linguistic. Her intonation, the fact that she's bilingual, and that so much of her charisma was felt in the way she spoke. I relished each and every e-mail and phone call from her.

The backstory: a few years ago, Ashley was sitting unobtrusively in her assigned seat on a flight to Paris. Young man enters plane and catches her eye. Young man has seat next to Ashley. Evidently he knew right away she was someone he wanted to get to know. Transatlantic flight gave them time for that initial conversation. Phone numbers were exchanged at the end of the flight. The rest is history.

Ashley was one of my naturalista brides. Everything about her is natural and genuine. Her deep love of family; her infatuation with her new groom; her love of her native South Carolina helped sustain her while living abroad and planning a Charleston wedding from France. There were so many things I loved about Ashley, but two things really stand out: First, she's a Mama's Gurl. . . the love and deference she showed her mom was simply endearing. The way she called her "momma" had a ring to it that I felt was filled with the utmost respect. Not everyone can call their mothers "momma" and carry it. The way Ashley spoke made me want my own children to refer to me only by that moniker. Secondly, Ashley's respect of her groom's family was lovely. This was their first trip to the U.S. The way she translated and slipped easily in and out of their French was like silk; effortless and accommodating.

Makeup vs. Humidity. . . Your Makeup Wins with Model in a Bottle!

"Will my makeup last?" is a question I'm frequently asked, especially during this time of year, when humidity is at its highest.

Brides and Dads

I have the privilege of being a part of the inner circle on a wedding day. I see lots of dynamics that play out. Brides and their best friends; brides and their siblings; and brides and their moms. All of this is wonderful stuff. But being the bona fide daddy's girl that I am, there's something very special about seeing a bride interact with her dad on her wedding day. It's a heart-wrenching display of trust. . . that father is in essence handing over his treasure to another man.

This was one of those special moments in what I do. First, it was special because Bride Bre from Ohio was so happy to be in Charleston for her wedding. She was in awe of the magnificent scenery and good manners that abound here. Next, she was just so darn happy to be having her makeup done. I knew this about her from all our correspondence leading up to her big day. When I knocked on her door to meet her, this beautiful smile is what greeted me. Finally, after her makeup had been applied (she didn't want to look at the process. . . she wanted the Big Reveal afterwards) she raised the hand mirror to look at herself. The waterworks began: she started tearing up, then her best friends started tearing up, and I started misting up. Just another reason why waterproof mascara is a must on a wedding day!

This photo was snapped by her best friend, who also officiated Bre's ceremony. I think it perfectly captures not only the beauty that is Bre, but her inner beauty most of all.

Makeup On. . . Makeup OFF!!!

Surely I'm not the only gal who loves, Loves, LOVES lingering in the Wal-Mart beauty aisles. Just the sheer volume of product choices can leave you overwhelmed. Many times I've found myself hanging out and passing some time checking out name brands versus store brands. Here's one of my favorite finds: Equate Everyday Facial Hydrating Cloths.

Time and again I find these Wal-Mart brand facial cleansing towels work for me. They do a great job at loosening makeup, lifting mascara, gently exfoliating, while leaving my face feeling soft and clean. I still need to apply lots of moisturizer in the evening, but that's the nature of my skin. Although these are marketed as a "Hydrating Cloths," I believe they'd work beautifully on someone with an oilier skin type than mine.

How to use: run one under lukewarm water and rub together until it foams up nicely. Rub over face, and scrub lightly until the lather cleans all traces of makeup. Don't be afraid to rub closely under closed eyes. Rinse face with clear water. These towelettes are not flush-friendly, so make sure to dispose of them in a waste basket.

That's it. Easy. Clean. Inexpensive ($5.97 for 60 count). And these are magnificent for travel. . . they are so compact and can be packed nicely in a plastic baggie for your on-the-go beauty routine.

In The Groove!

I haven't been this excited for a new MAC launch in a very long time.

IN THE GROOVE is a collection of products that appeal to my Bohemia hippie side. Think tie-die kinds of colors, yet in matte/satin finishes. This is especially appealing to me because all the shiny things MAC comes out with don't bode well with any fine lines or crepiness that may be creeping in ;)

As with several MAC launches, there are some old favorites making a reappearance. "Stereo Rose" Mineralized Skin Finish is a stunning way to add a little shimmer to emulate that just-out-in-the-sun radiance. It's limited in quantity, so my guess is it'll be one of the first to sell out.

I love the Mineralized Eye Shadow trios in "Style Influencer" (satin silver, pearly deep blue, and satin mauve brown) and "In the Groove" (satin gold, pearly burgundy, and satin coral). These trios last forever and are a steal since you're getting 3 mineral shadows baked into one great compact.

The featured eyeliners with this collection are MAC's Power Point liners. They are waterproof and last all day. I use these quite often on brides, and the one I go to most often is a black/brown/flecks-of-gold shade called "Buried Treasure." A must for any makeup bag.

The "It" color this summer has been all shades of coral. My favorite lipsticks in this limited collection are "Jazzed" (a bright coral pink) and an all-time fave "Creme d'Nude" (a pale muted peach beige). Top either off with some magnificent shine. . . Cremesheen Glass in either "Fashion Whim" or "Goin Casual."

Get Your Summer-Face On!

Today is officially the first day of Summer, so I've been thinking about what sustains my makeup needs for this time of year.

Here are my requirements:

* A routine that is relatively quick, that can be done in 10 minutes or less.

* A neutral palette that can be adapted or "brought up" for evening time.

* A look that will last throughout the day. . . whether beach-bound, office-bound, or running errands.

Here are my products, in the order I use them:

1. Make Up For Ever's Full Cover Concealer. A tiny dab will do; apply over clean, moisturized face to cover up dark areas around eyes, blemishes, or wherever you feel you need extra coverage. Use fluffy eye shadow brush (such as a MAC #216) to blend out edges of concealer.

2. Mineralize Skin Finish by MAC (in the compact. . . travels better, less mess than loose mineral powder). This is the ticket! Swirl your fluffiest kubuki brush over the top of this beautiful dome / baked powder, and then apply in circles over your face from forehead down to chin. Want more coverage? Swirl some more and apply. You'll find redness decreases, even skin tone increases.

3. MAC's Bronzing Powder in "Golden." There are several shades of this bronzer in the black compact, but my personal favorite is the matte-finish of Golden. It's a great all-over bronzer. Where to apply? Where does the sun hit you naturally? Forehead, cheeks, top of nose, chin, collarbones / decolletage. You can use the kubuki brush, or your blush brush to apply.

4. MAC's Paint Pot in "Rubenesque." This golden-peachy cream shadow, with a little shimmer is a phenomenal multi-tasking product. A little goes a long way; it's crease-, fade-, and water-resistant. This product hangs on all day. The color is perfect for summer; it enhances that beach-goddess look we all love. Use a fluffy #216 or #224 brush to swirl on, beginning at lash line.

5. MAC's Eye Kohl in "Teddy." My all-time favorite eye liner. I have not come across any one who could not wear it. At its base, it's a brown eyeliner, but with copper overtones. Use it boldly as a true eye-LINEr (draw line along lash line), or soften it by smudging this color into lashes and go for a smoldering look. **This is the product you can "bring up" your makeup for evening time by defining the eyes, perhaps even applying to water line (lower lash line on top of lashes).

6. Blinc Mascara

(formerly "Kiss Me" Mascara) in black. This is my mascara du jour. It's unique in that it's one of the "tube" mascaras that literally create small tubes around your lashes. It lengthens, volumizes, and stays put without being waterproof. . . you can actually go to the beach or pool and not have the raccoon effect. This is an amazing mascara that stays put until you use warm water to gently rub off.

7. And lastly, give your lips some love with MAC's Clear Lip Glass. Especially if you've been blessed with naturally-pigmented lips. You can make them as shiny or subtle as you want. A great stand-by.

So, that's it. It sounds like a lot, but you can have this entire routine down in less than 10 minutes. The versatile Mineralized Skin Finish and Golden Bronzer are the real quickies in this group.

Clean Makeup Brushes = High-Performance Applications

For those of you who know me in my professional capacity, you know I'm a makeup brush snob. I have to be because they are the tools of my trade. I don't do cheap brushes. I firmly believe the quality of my brushes extends to the quality of my applications. And an extension of that philosophy is taking care of my brushes.

Perhaps you don't give much thought to cleaning your makeup brushes, but I'm here to extoll the virtues of clean makeup tools. This was instilled in me during my tenure with MAC. Part of my job as an artist was to thoroughly clean my brushes after each customer. It was part of what MAC calls "good counter practices," and it follows me today through my freelance career with my own clients.

How long has it been since you cleaned your brushes? Granted, you don't need to clean them as often as I do, but if you're the only person using them, once every week or two is a good idea. Cleaning your brushes cuts down on bacteria and product build-up. It also extends the life of your brushes if you use a good cleaner.

Parian Spirit Brush Cleaner is high-octane for your makeup brushes. I discovered this AMAZING brush cleaner at The Makeup Show this past May. Parian Spirit was one of the "mom and pop" booths at this trade show. Their demonstration pulled me in immediately. The mom-half of this duo showed me how quickly this formula cleaned a lip brush that had plenty of product still on it. Then she showed me how to use the cleaning tub to remove creamy products from eye shadow brushes and blenders. By the time she got around to demonstrating on a blush brush, I was completely sold. And before I left the booth, all brushes were dry!

They had a special package just for the show, and I bought 2 of them. The package contained an empty jar that holds a cleaning screen; a 16-ounce bottle of cleaner; and a 2-ounce bottle of spray cleaner (for on-the-go cleaning). I gave one away, to a thoughtful critic, my sis-in-law Amy, who is quality-oriented in all aspects of her life. Once she tried it out and declared it "GREAT," I knew I had a winner on my hands.

In addition to the amazing, quick cleaning results, your brushes are left with the most amazing citrusy scent. Since I've been using it, every one of my brides has commented on how great the brushes smell.

OK, so here's the only drawback, and it's in the process of being taken care of: you cannot purchase Parian Spirit directly from their website (it's in development). However you can find it at Amazon.com and Alcone.com (a makeup artist's Wal-Mart). I'd still recommend visiting the Parian Spirit site to read the pdf file about this amazing product. . . it includes directions for use, ingredients, and product descriptions. Happy cleaning!

NYC Bride Charmed by Charleston

Luke Wilson Special Events knows how to put on a grand affair. It's nothing short of fantastic working with the team that Luke puts together for one of his weddings. This weekend was a reunion with some of the best vendors I've worked with.

Karyn Iserman Distinctive Portraiture. Such an amazing lady. I've worked several weddings with Karyn, and now my reaction whenever I see her is that of reassured contentment. Karyn possesses that unspoken quality that says "everything's going to be better than all right; it's going to be great." The proof is in her photos.

Katherine Bailey Price of A Stuart Laurence Salon. Katherine is a top-notch Charleston hair stylist. She's fashion-forward, progressive, and a perfectionist. I have a deep affection for Katherine and she probably doesn't even know it. She is the stunning redhead who is the cover girl of my website; I did her makeup for her wedding last spring. A shout out also, to Michael Varnadore, who heads up the talented team down at SLS on King Street.

I'm sure we all agree that this was a very special bride. Kathy, a designer for Aeropostale, lives and works in NYC and chose the beautiful backdrop of Boone Hall Plantation as the site for her wedding. She is such a sweet, dear heart that everyone wanted to bring their best to the table to make this a wedding she'd never forget. I believe her wishes were met and exceeded.

How to Attain "Glow" Status. . .

There are many ways to attain a glow. Hot yoga; great sex; an unexpected compliment; contentment with where one is; or the quick cosmetic way: Smashbox's Artificial Light Luminizing Lotion.

I "discovered" this wonderful highlighter at the NYC Makeup Show's jam-packed Smashbox display. It comes in three shades: "Diffuse," "Flash," and "Glow" are luminous pearl, peach, and bronze colors meant for light, medium, and deep skin tones, respectively.

One pump of this water-consistency highlighter is all you need across the tops of cheekbones to give you a dewy, youthful glow. Because of its intense pigmentation, I swipe it on before I apply foundation to give faces a truly believable glow. The effect still shines through.

This is a must for nearly every bride on her wedding day.

The Voyeur in Me: Happy to be a Fly on the Wall

Few things are more inspiring to me than (1) breaking out of a routine, and (2) keeping company with those who are really passionate about what they do.

I didn't realize until this past Wednesday, that changing up some of my MUA routine would be a catharsis. Not only would I purge some of my old habits, but I would condense, downsize, and economize the way I would look at my own makeup artistry. All of this because I had the opportunity to go on-location to observe a photo shoot where I would play no role. This day, the voyeuristic side of me would be placated: I would be that fly on the wall. This is rather ironic to me because my kids and I often play "If you could have any super-human power, what would it be?" My answer is often, "I'd be invisible." There's so much to learn when you're invisible. In yoga, a good teacher once told me if I became quiet and really listened (intuition. . .perhaps, God?), answers would come to me. This was one of those moments.

My dear friend, Angela, pictured above (an amazing yogini and beautiful soul) is putting together what will surely be an amazing modeling portfolio, and I was blessed to be present for what I would call her breakthrough photo shoot. I was along for moral support, but also in the capacity of observing MUA. She made certain the photographer and working MUA did not mind my presence.

The Makeup Artist. When I arrived, Angela was having her makeup applied by Marta Maria, whom I would liken to the eye of a storm. . .calm and reassured by her expertise. Marta splits her time between France and Charleston; she was a makeup artist during Charleston Fashion Week, and currently has work featured in Marie Claire magazine. She is an artist first; makeup is one of her media; she's also a painter. What struck me most was her implicit understanding of light. This is an extension of her knowledge of color, product, and client. (A conversation with her about France's midday light left me wanting my passport updated ASAP so I could make the trip. Marta says a visit to the French countryside is all it takes to make one realize the inspiration behind the works of Van Gogh, Gaugain, and others; pastel colors abound.) But it was also her understanding of the photographer and how she works and what she likes that made this such a success.

The Photographer. Diana Deaver is the storm. When this petite lady walked in the room, the energy shifted from sedate to charged. Diana immediately surveyed all clothing, accessories, lighting, and Marta's work. Until that moment, I've never witnessed a photo shoot where the photographer had such a stake in the makeup. Her first words to Marta were, "I love the lightness under her eyes, but I'd like a darker contrast on her lids." Evidently, Diana has been known to do makeup herself. She knows what she wants, comes prepared with a vision for the shoot, and is perfectly prepared to execute it on her own, if need be. However this day, she was working with her friend Marta, and she knew and trusted her capabilities.

Many makeup artists like to check out what other MUA's use. I'm no exception. . . I asked Marta if I could check out her kit as it's quite different than mine. She showed up with an overnight bag that held a couple of boxes. Those boxes house many samples of products: NARS, T.LeClerc, Maybelline, Revlon (which Marta says she finds best for powder foundation), brushes, applicators, and several other things. Her kit is so compact, yet she has everything she needs and then some.

Here's the thing about both Marta and Diana: they are master multi-taskers. Marta carries relatively little makeup with her, but she's a mixologist. She puts things together to come up with new colors, shades, tones, hues, and textures. Marta uses her fingers often to apply and blend out colors. A cosmetic wedge was the other tool she used most. Diana has an eye for the unusual: among the items of clothing, there was a black satin bra that she turned upside down, and fashioned a neck cuff out of; it was stunning in that capacity. She told me she once used a glass bottle to quickly make a necklace for one of her models; no doubt the results were outstanding.

As I sit here and write, I realize this could easily be a multi-chaptered blog. There was so much to take in that day. I haven't even told you about the synergy these two artists had with one another. At different times, these were things I heard them say about one another. . .

Marta (to Angela about Diana): "I have a feeling, and can see her vision. . .where she's going with this. . ."

Diana to Marta: "I trust you completely."

Well, as you can see, the results are stupendous. Everything aligned that day: a beautiful model brought her expression and talents to play; a light-oriented makeup artist with no ego stepped up to the plate and delivered a flawless face using mostly her fingers and few products; and a photographic genius talked, finessed, and directed her subject to this level of perfection.

What I learned from Marta: my artistry lies not in my kit, but within me. What I learned from Diana: cultivate a passion for what you do; it will sustain you and put energy in your surroundings.

I'd say my super-human power came true that day: I got to be invisible and drink all this in. It was a powerful learning experience, and I thank all involved.

Wow, how time flies when you're having fun . . . such a cliche, but sooo true. It's been nearly two weeks since I've blogged. A lot has been going on, though: trial runs, weddings, photo shoots, and a long weekend in one of my favorite places in this world: New York City.

For those of you waiting with baited breath about my part two of "Brows. . ." well, I hate to disappoint, so I'll pick that subject up again in the next few days ;) And rather than inundate you with a long diatribe about how PHENOMENAL my New York/Makeup Show weekend was, I'll just hit the highlights for now. There will be blogs forthcoming about all the amazing lines that were represented. Suffice it to say, I had to buy two new bags (in addition to the one I checked at the airport) to transport all my goodies back safely.

One of the aspects of my job that I love so very much is continuing education. The Makeup Show is a bi-coastal event, taking place in Los Angeles in the winter, and NYC in the spring. Scores of cosmetics lines are represented, and everyone comes showing their best wares, newest techniques, upcoming trends, and Lots and LOTS of product for sale. For a makeup junkie such as myself, it's the closest thing to nirvana that I'll come to, other than actually doing my job. . . making people look good. I am a better makeup artist for having attended this function.

I'll talk specifics later on, but I did want to comment on some of the photos I've included. One of the highlights of my visit was meeting Monique Boyer who is the Director of Artist Relations for MAC Cosmetics. What an impressive lady she is. MAC was well-represented with a large booth focusing mainly on their Pro line and elaborate demonstrations of body painting.

Make Up For Ever and Smashbox were other hugely popular brands as evidenced by the 2+ hours I waited in these lines just to purchase these products. . . TOTALLY worth the wait because I had the opportunity to speak with makeup artists from all over the country, as well as press/media, beauty editors and bloggers who cover events such as this. Just to hear what other MUAs like, and their tricks, and savvy. . . that was an education in itself.

So, once again, my heart is full and feeling blessed for being able to take part in this phenomenal trade show.

Thanks to my husband for going with; my in-laws Jeb and Sandy for holding down the fort with my kiddos so we could make this trip; and the New York Yankees for providing my husband much joy with a 9th inning win over the Boston Red Sox!

I'm an Eyebrow Girl! Part One.

Check out Megan's eyebrows. . .they don't happen by accident. I don't know where Megan's makeup artist begins but s/he really does a fine job with her brows.

The first thing I do when I begin work with any client, is reach for my eyebrow brush. It's a reflex. . . I need to see what I have to work with. I, as do many MUAs, feel the eyebrow provides the "frame" for the rest of the face. Same thing with myself: the first thing I do before applying any makeup to my own face is to groom my brows. You've heard of "good hair days". . . well, I need to determine if it's going to be a "good brow day."

Two months ago, I was having dinner with a group of other MUA's from Charleston (The Makeup Mavens), and I looked across the table and really noticed Elizabeth's phenomenal eyebrows. Elizabeth Quinton is also a former MAC artist and I quickly fell into "MAC talk" with her. She has the eyebrows I love. . . full, gracefully arched, clean. . . what I call "statement-brows." I was eager to hear her routine, products used, etc. but she quickly deferred her brow-blessing to another person: Heather Faucette of Glow Spa in Mt. Pleasant. Elizabeth swore by this gal, saying she was the brow-maker. Hmm. File that info away and fast forward. . .

This past Saturday, I called up Glow Spa and secured my eyebrow waxing appointment with Elizabeth's brow lady. Heather was everything EQ said she was: studious, meticulous, and opinionated. And that's a great thing. . . I want someone in the know, who has an opinion, and can tell me what will look great on me. Immediately I felt comfortable and knew my brows would be taken to the next level: cleaned up, trimmed, no stragglers, or "sticks." I have pretty decent eyebrows to begin with, but they definitely needed some maintenance, and Heather, in her gentle way, told me what I needed to do. . . what she needed to do to help me achieve my brow-vision.

I left Glow Spa with Elizabeth-esque brows and an appointment for a follow-up in three weeks.

Thank you, Elizabeth for your sage advice. And thank you, Heather for your guidance and steady hand.

p.s. ". . .Eyebrow Girl, Part 2" will be about the actual products I use to achieve the look I like. . . but definitely, the place to begin is with a well-manicured eye brow by a great esthetician.

MAC's Chromagraphic Pencils, an Insta-Fave!

It's easy to overlook these quiet titans. . . but they are Titans nonetheless. They sit on the display, unassuming yet asking to be picked up. . . if you do, don't put it down. . . get yours immediately, because they are selling out as I type this.

MAC's recent Pret-A-Papier launch included these Chromagraphic Pencils. They are flesh-toned, soft lining pencils, which are quickly proving to be my newest multi-taskers.

My first use of them was to clean up the outside of any lip application. They are especially wonderful on a classic, red lip. I use these after I apply lip liner, lipstick, and gloss. It helps prevent any bleeding edges or feathering of color. Lightly line the outside of the lip with this pencil. If you press hard, it will leave a noticeable skin-colored line. But I go back with either my finger or a cosmetic wedge/sponge, and blend it gently. The effect is clean and precise.

These pencils are also approved for use in the eye area. I like this applied directly to the waterline (the bottom lash line closest to the eye), as a freshener. The flesh-tone helps make the eyes "pop" and makes all makeup there appear cleaner and neater.

In a pinch, these could be used as spot concealers. They come in two formulations: NC15 / NW20 (great if you have fair skin) and NW25/NC30 (appropriate for medium to deeper skin tones).

Concealer Wars, Continued. . .

Chances are that if you asked a makeup artist what their favorite item of makeup is, they will not say "concealer" because it's not very glamourous. However, I'm going to say "Concealer!" because it's the one item I use that makes a noticeable difference immediately. Bye-bye blemishes, so-long redness, sayonara dark circles!

Concealer is the work horse of my makeup kit. After a little skin prep, it's the one item I spend most time mulling over. My eye is constantly looking at any imperfection and thinking "how can I minimize, or get rid of that?" My answer is nearly always with my concealer. Now, there are certainly other tricks and other factors that come into play. . . the condition of the skin (hence, 'skin prep'). For example, dehydrated or oily skin, needs to be neutralized, or brought back to a stasis so that the concealer can properly do it's job and sit evenly on the skin.

For drier skin types, I like the LORAC Double Feature concealer pictured above. It is a creamy stick on one end, that can be applied directly under eyes or on top of blemishes. A roller-ball is encased on this end, presumably to roll over and spread out the concealer. And although the concept of that roller-ball is interesting, I prefer my fluffy MAC #217 brush to blend it out. The other end of this unit houses a highlighter that has a doe-foot applicator, so you can dot it on over the highest edges of cheekbones, brow bones, or wherever you'd like a little shimmer. I would consider this a lightweight concealer, great for spring and summer.

For skin that's oilier, Make Up Forever's Full Cover Concealer, works wonders. It's main attraction for many is that it's waterproof, which especially for brides, is a huge plus. The coverage is spectacular, evening out most dark circles and covering redness. I use my #217 brush to apply this thick, creamy formulation. It's quite blendable, and noticeably more stay-put.

So, my love of concealer continues, which means, I'll always be trying new ones and telling you about the newest in my arsenal of coverage. Both of these products can be found at your nearest Sephora or online at

Sara is the walking, talking personification of a Country Queen. . . and I'm not talking the Reba kind, but more along the lines of the Carrie kind (as in "Underwood"). She was beautiful when she sat down with not a stitch of makeup on her face, but the transformation as we enhanced her natural beauty was astounding. Her sister, Chrissie, was with her and she wept as she saw this take place. But even all this physical beauty wasn't what was really special about her. . . it was her kind, sweet heart that shone through. This girl was Love walking.

I had had some correspondence with her photographer, Richard Ellis, days before the wedding. I knew I was going to like him immediately. This is a guy who is on it. . . no moss gathers on him. On day one of our e-mails, I had requested some photos from her bridal session, and on day two, there was a disc in my mailbox. Please check out his website and his impressive resume. However, it's his polite, calm demeanor and the easy conversation that happens with this gentleman that makes him special. That, and his assistant Gillian (his daughter), make working together a joy. OK, all that and the amazing photos he's able to get.
